Martyn Bal, Romantically Long-Term

It’s romantic, it’s romantic! Look at that cropped military jacket over the double-breasted henley and those as-short-as-it-gets cropped safari shorts. The subtle cummerbunds, the attenuated trousers, the sheer! Martyn Bal offers a collection that is so quintessentially Spring and boyfriend-ready it hurts. It’s an assemblage of elegance, nonchalance, and longevity that screams “young love.” All the pieces need to get in my closet right now!

Let The Right One In

This weekend I saw two movies: Watchmen and Let The Right One In, both films having supernatural aspects of some sort. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a total Twilight fan—whatever, whatever, haters to the left—which may cause some bias, but Let The Right One In totally kicked Watchmen‘s ass albeit on a smaller budget and (extremely) shorter reel.

LTROI

Please don’t let the Twilight reference devalue your initial reactions. This film is far from it in many facets. In typical Swedish fashion, the film sets out to be minimal in both dialogue and setting. Shot during winter, white pervades the scenes and verbal exchanges are littered with pauses, quiet moments. It is a love story between a boy and vampire, but told rather unconventionally. I especially enjoyed the still shots, where only the tops of trees or a running stream were visible for a length of time. I’d also like to mention that the costume design is spot-on. The 12-year-old protagonist—in a flurry of mid-calf boots, skinny jeans, knit sweaters, and accessories—appears to have an impressive knack for layering… yup, definitely an Acne kid.

A Balloon Called Moaning

The Joy Formidable

Bleach blond and fabulous, Ritzy Bryan’s vocals hit hard and fast on The Joy Formidable‘s debut, A Balloon Called Moaning. At times, I hear the distortion of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the vocal thickness of Asobi, and infectious riffs found in any catchy tune. However, I’d like to think of their sound as entirely new. After all, sandwiched between new releases by Grizzly Bear and Great Lake Swimmers in my music library, this is the album I keep coming back to for a dose of pop bliss.

J.W. Anderson

Now that Spring is officially just a couple weeks away, I have been desperately trying to remember the collections that I swooned over months ago (apart from the obvious Style.com favorites). A visit to Coûte Que Coûte—quickly becoming one of my favorite fashion blogs—reminded me of J.W. Anderson and the armored print pants and faux chain-mail tank top look I was obsessed with.

I only was able to visit his website recently and what I read about the collection, I thought, was pretty awesome. The lookbook is gorgeous as well and increases the want factor of the accessories by at least 1000% percent. I need those necklaces and headbands in my life. I would wear them to a wedding I’m attending in a couple months.

Likewise, trousers embroidered with the three-dimensional head of a lion function as a symbol of the protector; an implication of warrior patron the Archangel Saint Michael, whose baroque portrait by Quido Reni circa 1636 manifests itself in shirts, jackets, and trousers in pale blues and punches of blood red.

I love, love, love the inspiration for this Spring collection. That acorn headpiece is nothing short of stunning.

Wild Tigers I Have Known

I was able to watch Cam Archer’s Wild Tigers I Have Known again. I forgot how beautiful it was.

When the movie came out in 2006, Cam (or whoever was in charge of the movie’s official myspace) offered the large format posters they used for Sundance to the first 25 who replied. I recieved one, of course, mainly because of my obsession with Gus van Sant which led me to become obsessed with this movie before even seeing it. It’s happily sitting unframed beside my desk. I should do something about that soon…
