Serious Drawings

Whether on paper, post-its, or mouse traps these wonderful works by Marc Johns had me smiling all day. I love their simplistic humour and the wonderful watercolor textures. I’m definitely going to be ordering some prints and possibly a signed copy of his book, if I’m lucky! Don’t you just love the dapper, Thom Browne-esque looking gentlemen in these illustrations?

Marc Johns

From Marc’s website:

Marc Johns creates whimsical drawings filled with dry wit and humour. Whether it’s a man with branches growing out of his head that need pruning, or a pipe that’s trying to quit smoking, his characters are simply, sparsely drawn, yet speak volumes with just a few strokes of the pen. He’s been drawing since he was tiny. He’s not tiny anymore, but he’s not exactly big either. Marc is not sure why he’s talking about himself in the third person…

Mysterious Skin

I just finished watching Mysterious Skin and I’m speechless. Greg Araki created such a beautiful, raw, and poignant film that I will definitely remember. The acting was spot on and the cinematography suited the story perfectly. I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to get a around to viewing it. The end hits extremely cold and hard, especially with Sigur Ros’s classic “Samskeyti” ushering in the credits, and I found myself wide-eyed and open-mouthed for a good minute. There were tears involved.

Mysterious Skin

More than anything, I felt an overwhelming nostalgia throughout the film about my own childhood. How many things have happened during that time that I don’t even recall? How many friends have I made and then subsequently forgotten? What would it be like to see them again? There are so many bits of the past that I’d like to revisit, write down, remember. If only I knew then how much I’d miss them now.

Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd do an excellent job in generating the at-once stark & lush mood of Mysterious Skin with their masterful score. A great musical accompaniment to such an introspective film. Here are three songs from my not-so-distant past to support my wistful thinking:

Nine Daughters & A Stereo

Can I just say that the Nine Daughters & A Stereo model agency website has to be one of the most—if not the most—well designed out of all the agency pages. The typography is spot on, it’s amazingly very accessible to the public (complete with large format photos, videos, and downloadable PDF-format sheets for each model), and includes a full-screen format for everything! It’s simple and to the point, exactly what an agency site should look like. The goofy intro video backed by Jonathan Richman’s “Give Paris One More Chance” doesn’t hurt either. Kudos to Chewing The Sun for their great coding and design.

A little bit more information after the jump.

Good Morning Midnight

Fanfarlo
Simon Balthazer (vocals), Mark West (guitar), Leon Beckenham (trumpet), Cathy Lucas (violin), Justin Finch (bass), and Amos Memon (drums).

I’m a bit late jumping onto the Fanfarlo fan-wagon but I’m now fully up on it and will gladly take up the reigns if necessary! I just got a hold of Reservoir today and it’s been on repeat ever since—easily one of the best albums (re)released this year. The instrumentation reminds me very much of Beirut (accordions, mandolins, and sweeping horns abound!) and Simon Balthazar’s vocal delivery is basically the love-child of Zach Condon’s vibrato (also of Beirut) and Alec Ounsworth’s distinct warble (of CYHSY). These things, plus the five other members of Fanfarlo contribute to a very rich, enjoyable, and solid debut album perfect for the summer. Only good things can come of this!

How To Catch A Star

Oliver Jeffers - 01
Page 31 from ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.

These beautiful prints by author and illustrator Oliver Jeffers had me floored. Equally enchanting and evocative, they remind of reading The Little Prince for the first time and bawling my eyes out. More prints and information about Oliver under the cut.
