Short Story: Michelle Tandoc-Pichereau

The child is resilient. At night, I wrap my hands around its clay skin, squeeze tight until the flesh swells like sausage. The child squirms and feigns sleep. In the morning it is again clasped to my ankle, tracking dust as I pace the floor, calling me Mama.

Sometimes I manage to lock the doors, but the child slips in through the window, crawls through the pipes, a pffft of air in the cracks in my walls. It smiles when it sees me, opens its grimy, nicked arms for a hug.

I leave the child in a cardboard box in the middle of the market, right there between slabs of pork and veined cheese. A second too quick and it’s in my footsteps, a shrunken shadow nipping at my heels. I growl and bare my teeth.

The child is there again, mewling.

A day, a moment. My hoisted shoulders crack from lifting. I succumb to the bitter, to the ache gutting me open. The child is there. The child is always there, watching me, eyes sharp like mirrors. I sob and blow it a kiss. I let it climb on my lap. I trace its cheek. I surrender.

Six Scents

Video: Azuma Makoto & Alessandro Tinelli

Annually, a group of six prominent artists are selected to create a series of six fragrances with six celebrated perfumers in order to raise awareness and funding for a deserving charity. Collectively, diverse members of the creative world are invited to contribute and a global initiative is launched. The goal is to trigger momentum around each cause through creativity with a conscience.

Six Scents: Series Two
In collaboration with Givaudan, Six Scents Series Two explores the relationship between artist and nature through a collection of fragrances, stories, films, art and photography. Each experience intends to instigate the desire to preserve the environment of Six Scents so that others can continue to be inspired by the beauty, power and intrigue of nature. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Pro-Natura in support of their environmental sustainability programs.

Raise It Up

Video: Pretty Monkey Studio

Beautiful. The folks at Pretty Monkey Studio created this from footage from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Dieterle and Max Reinhardt made in 1935. 1935!!!

Glitter, billowing fabric, UNICORN PONIES. I’m pretty sure this is my future.

Merry Christmas from me!

p1020986

It’s Christmas Eve here and the relatives have arrived at my parent’s house. My mom is running around the kitchen—I think she’s using Giada de Laurentiis’ fried calamari recipe, omg—while the cousins and I are sitting around online shopping with our MacBooks and/or painting nails (proof). I can’t wait to eat! This is my tree and there are absolutely no presents under it for me. Believe me, I’ve checked. Multiple times. Nevertheless, the holidays have been running smoothly and hopefully tomorrow will bring some surprises!

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas tomorrow and get decent presents. Mele Kalikimaka!

Wild Beasts

Diva. The first word that came to mind upon reaching the 1 minute 30 second mark of “The Fun Powder Plot”, the opening track of Two Dancers by the dazzling Wild Beats, was diva. I use the word not in the haughty sense but in the omg-stunning-she-betta-WORK way. I’m not trying to mitigate the wonderful instrumentation by the rest of the band’s members when I say that Hayden Thorpe’s dynamic vocal delivery completely makes each and every one of the songs on this album. It’s that good. Before seeing what he even looked like, I imagined him unbereft of glam-rock apparel, voguing it up—hairflips, wrists, runway, and all—to these theatrical gems; an equal to Maxwell Demon in Velvet Goldmine, a diva in every way. I still imagine him like this, despite what Google Images displays.

Wild Beasts
Wild Beasts by Dan Wilton

I was surprised to see that I had some earlier songs from them since February of last year (somehow labeled as Wild Beats) and that it took me until their sophomore release more than a year later to get excited. For shame! Wild Beasts is a band that should definitely be closely followed and praised. It was not until they coined their style as ‘downbeat erotic music’ that I realized that was precisely what I was looking for.
